America helps save the world
They’re the most indelible
images of our age: The beaches
of Normandy, Pearl Harbor. Iwo
Jima. Hiroshima. From 1939-1945
Allied and Axis fighting
engulfed the globe in the
largest and deadliest war in
human history.
The U.S. entered the war in
Europe in 1941, declaring war on
Japan the day after Pearl
Harbor. Three days later Germany
declared war against America.
405,399 American servicemen and
women died. Over one million
were wounded helping stop the
advance of Facism and the
imperial ambitions of Japan.
The U.S. emerged from the War as
a Superpower as did the Soviet
Union. Europe was divided into
Western and Soviet spheres of
influence setting the stage for
the five decade-long cold war
that followed.
