The Spanish-American War

The Eagle Spreads Its Wings.

Even in its own time, the war with Spain was seen as a turning point in American history
On February 15, 1898 The American battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana harbor. Nine weeks later--over newspaper shouts of “Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!”, the U.S. declared war on Spain. In decisive defeats of the venerable Spanish Navy in Manilla—and in daring Cuban battles such as San Juan Hill,--America came out of “The Splendid Little War” owning or controlling all Spain’s posessions in the Pacific and The Caribbean. The U.S. was no longer an unproven power. Its military was capable of spanning the world.

The U.S.Pacific Fleet, under Commodore Dewey defeated the Spanish in a matter of hours at Manilla Bay. Lt. Colonel Teddy Roosevelt became a national hero. And U.S. Marines established a permanent American Naval base in Guantanamo Cuba.
