The Indian Wars: Native American

After losing the War of 1812 the British abandoned their Native American allies in the now United States. The Indians were on their own against U.S. troops intent on opening the west for American expansion.

Over the next eighty years, it was open warfare between the U.S. and raiding Indian tribes refusing relocation by the government to reservations. At least 40 Indian wars claimed the lives of an estimated 19,000 whites and 45,000 Indians before the closing of the American frontier in 1890.

General George Custer's 7th Calvary was beaten by Sitting Bull at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Other important battles included Wounded Knee. Apache raids against Western villages continued until 1885 with the capture of Geronimo, the last important Indian chief.
