The Persian Gulf War

Operation Desert Storm.

When Saddam Husein siezed control of Kuwait in August, 1990, the U.S. led a worldwide coalition to drive the Iraqis out . On January 16, 1991, Allied forces began bombing Iraqi infrastructure. Sadam retaliated by launching SCUDS at Israel and Saudia Arabia.

Continuous Allied bombing paralyzed Iraq and cut off supplies to the occupation forces in Kuwait. Iraqi soldiers surrendered by the thousands. The rest were chased back to Iraq by the armies of General Colin Powel. Forty two days after the U.S. led sorties began, President George H.W. Bush ordered a cease fire.

After fighting Iran, Saddam’s second attempt at foreign conquest ended badly. Despite the crushing defeat Hussein’s government held its grip on power for the next twelve years.

148 Americans were killed in action.
