The Revolutionary War

In 1776 the thirteen colonies declared themselves independent of England as the United States of America.

The War of Independence had begun a year earlier at Lexington when British troops fired on colonials, the “shot heard ‘round the world.” Eight and half years later the head of the Continental Army , General George Washington, accepted the victory accorded by the Treaty of Paris. The United States was a sovereign nation.

Independence didn’t come cheaply. Estimates list 6,824 Revolutionary troops killed and 8,445 wounded. Another 18,500 died from non-combat causes, mostly disease. Poorly-supplied and under-manned, Washington’s army was still able to score decisive defeats at Trenton, Boston, and Saratoga--encouraging France to enter the war against England.
